Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to frequently asked questions our families, students and community members may have regarding the Storm Lake Community School District’s plan to reopen schools for the 2020-21 school year. If you have any additional questions, please contact us.

 

Will students be able to attend in-person classes this fall?

At this time, we believe we will be able to welcome students and staff back into our buildings for in-person learning at the start of the school year. However, we will likely implement a “pod” concept for grades K-6, through which students would attend class in small groups at various locations throughout our campuses, rather than in the traditional larger groups. Our older students would engage in part-time in-person/remote learning.

Will students and staff need to wear masks? 

We do not anticipate requiring students or staff to wear masks or other personal protective equipment (PPE) while in school. However, these items will be allowed and encouraged. We are committed to fostering a respectful environment in which there are no stigmas associated with wearing masks and taking other precautions.

How will the district ensure physical distancing takes place in school buildings?

While maintaining physical distancing will be a challenge, we are implementing a number of measures to ensure students remain at least three feet apart for as much of the school day as possible while they are in our buildings. 

 

The pod concept would allow us to better accommodate physical distancing, as students would be learning in small groups of their peers rather than in a larger, more traditional classroom setting. 

 

What supplies has the district secured to minimize risk for students and adults?

The district has purchased a variety of equipment and supplies to promote a safe and healthy learning environment for our students. These include the following items:

  • Hand sanitizer and dispensers

  • Standalone sanitizer station

  • Sanitizer/sterilizer fogging machines

  • Water bottle filling stations

  • Scanners for lunch

  • Face shields for all staff

  • Oxygen meters

  • Portable dividers

  • Plexiglas and other dividers for offices and media centers

  • Social distancing guideline signage

 

In addition, there will be two new custodian positions in our schools to help clean and disinfect on a consistent basis. 

 

How will the district monitor students’ health?

Any student or staff member who is feeling ill will be required to visit the school nurse immediately. Our nurses will operate under a standard procedure for addressing situations in which an individual is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. The individual in question will remain in a designated location and will be sent home right away.

 

I am not yet comfortable sending my child to school. Can I have them continue with remote learning only this school year?

Yes, we will also offer a remote-only learning option for families who do not yet feel comfortable having their students return to school. We anticipate having capacity limits on this option and will provide more details soon.

 

What should I do if my child starts to exhibit flu-like symptoms?

Parents of students exhibiting flu-like symptoms, as well as staff exhibiting flu-like symptoms, are asked to contact Buena Vista County Public Health at 712-749-2548. Any individual experiencing these symptoms should not come to school and will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test before being able to return to school.

 

How will the district clean buildings, rooms and surfaces to ensure a safe learning environment?

The district will implement enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols to help keep students, staff and families safe while COVID-19 remains with us. Our custodial staff will significantly increase the wiping down and disinfecting of public spaces and high-touch surfaces throughout the school day. We will also provide greater access to cleaning materials for our teachers and staff so that they can clean and disinfect spaces, as needed.

 

Each evening, our custodial team will conduct a thorough cleaning of our spaces, again disinfecting high-touch surfaces like sinks, drinking fountains, door handles, tables and desks.

 

Will there be physical education classes?

We plan to offer physical education classes in the 2020-21 school year. All efforts will be made to ensure physical distancing takes place during these classes. Physical education instructors will engage students in no-contact sports and activities, while avoiding activities in which students need to be close together. 

 

As a district we made this decision to help ensure our students continue to get adequate exercise during a time at which a healthy lifestyle can help protect individuals from serious illness.

 

Will students be able to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities? 

Yes, we plan to offer athletics and extracurricular activities in the fall semester. However, activities, practices and schedules may need to be modified to ensure students remain physically distanced and can maintain proper hygiene. Each activity will look a little different, and coaches and advisors will be able to provide you and your students with more information. 

 

It remains possible that some or all of our athletic seasons may be restricted or shortened. This will depend largely on decisions made by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. These decisions are also subject to change during the season depending on the status of COVID-19 in our state and region.

What will busing look like?

The district will take a number of precautions to protect students as they ride the bus to and from school. The bus driver will always wear a face covering if they leave their seat and the seat directly behind the driver will remain empty. 

​

All students will need to wear masks and may sit only two to a seat. Seats will be assigned and only registered students will be allowed transportation. Students will not be allowed to have open food or beverage containers on the bus. 

​

Finally, each bus will be thoroughly disinfected after each route. 

 

Will the district close schools if a certain number of students or staff report illnesses?

Yes, the district is preparing for situations in which school buildings need to once again close due to a significant number of students or staff testing positive for COVID-19 or reporting other illnesses. We are also planning for the need to close buildings if there is a considerable increase in COVID-19 cases in our state or region.

 

Please note that the decision to close schools in our district rests largely on Governor Kim Reynolds, the Iowa Department of Education and Iowa Department of Public Health. 

 

What are the district’s plans for transitioning back to remote learning if schools need to be closed again in the future?

If extended school closures become necessary during the school year, the district will be ready to quickly transition to remote learning. While we recognize that the transition last spring was not perfect, we learned a great deal about how to improve the process in the future. Our administrators, teachers and staff continue to make great progress in planning for this scenario. 

 

We will provide more information on exactly what this process will look like as we get closer to the start of the school year.

¿Cómo asegurará el distrito que el distanciamiento físico se lleve a cabo en los edificios escolares?

Si bien mantener el distanciamiento físico será un reto, estamos implementando una serie de medidas para garantizar que los estudiantes se mantengan al menos a 1,5 metros de distancia durante la mayor parte posible del día escolar mientras estén en nuestros edificios. 

 

El concepto pod nos permitiría acomodar mejor el distanciamiento físico, ya que los estudiantes estarían aprendiendo en pequeños grupos de sus pares en lugar de en un ambiente de clase más grande y tradicional.

 

¿Qué suministros ha conseguido el distrito para minimizar el riesgo para estudiantes y adultos?

¿Cómo supervisará el distrito la salud de los estudiantes?

Cualquier estudiante o miembro del personal que se sienta enfermo tendrá que visitar inmediatamente a la enfermera de la escuela. Nuestras enfermeras operarán bajo un procedimiento estándar para abordar situaciones en las que una persona experimenta síntomas de COVID-19. La persona en cuestión permanecerá en una ubicación designada y será enviada a casa inmediatamente.

 

Todavía no me siento cómodo enviando a mi hijo(a) a la escuela. ¿Puedo hacer que continúen con el aprendizaje remoto sólo este año escolar?

¿Qué debo hacer si mi hijo(a) empieza a presentar síntomas parecidos a la gripe?

A los padres de los estudiantes que exhiben síntomas de gripe, así como al personal que exhibe síntomas de gripe, se les pide que contacten con Buena Vista County Public Health al 712-749-2548. Cualquier persona que experimente estos síntomas no debe ir a la escuela y deberá demostrar que se realizó una prueba COVID-19 negativa antes de poder volver a la escuela.

 

¿Cómo limpiará el distrito edificios, salas y superficies para garantizar un entorno de aprendizaje seguro?

El distrito implementará protocolos mejorados de limpieza y desinfección para ayudar a mantener a los estudiantes, al personal y a las familias a salvo mientras COVID-19 permanece con nosotros. Nuestro personal de limpieza aumentará significativamente el borrado y la desinfección de espacios públicos y superficies táctiles durante todo el día escolar. También proporcionaremos un mayor acceso a los materiales de limpieza para nuestros maestros y personal para que puedan limpiar y desinfectar espacios, según sea necesario.

¿Habrá clases de educación física?

Planeamos ofrecer clases de educación física en el año escolar 2020-21. Se hará todo lo posible para asegurar que el distanciamiento físico tenga lugar durante estas clases. Los instructores de educación física involucraran a los estudiantes en actividades y deportes sin contacto, al tiempo que evitarán actividades en las que los estudiantes necesitan estar cerca entre sí.

¿Podrán los estudiantes participar en actividades atléticas y extracurriculares? 

Sí, planeamos ofrecer actividades atléticas y extracurriculares en el semestre de otoño. Sin embargo, es posible que sea necesario modificar las actividades, prácticas y horarios para garantizar que los estudiantes permanezcan físicamente distanciados y puedan mantener una higiene adecuada. Cada actividad tendrá un aspecto un poco diferente y los entrenadores y asesores podrán proporcionarle más información a usted y a sus alumnos. 

 

Sigue siendo posible que algunas o todas nuestras estaciones atléticas se vean restringidas o acortadas. Esto dependerá en gran medida de las decisiones tomadas por la Asociación Atlética de la Escuela Secundaria de Iowa. Estas decisiones también están sujetas a cambios durante la temporada dependiendo del estado de COVID-19 en nuestro estado y región.

 

¿Cerrará el distrito las escuelas si un cierto número de estudiantes o personal  se enferman?

Sí, el distrito se está preparando para situaciones en las que los edificios escolares deben volver a cerrarse debido a un número significativo de estudiantes o personal que ha realizado pruebas positivas de COVID-19 o que ha informado de otras enfermedades.
